Memories & Impressions of Futa Toro
When I was 21 years old I applied to the Peace Corps and was sent to the small village of Thioubalel-Lao located on the banks of the Senegal River which formed the border between Senegal and Mauritania in west Africa. A village of several hundred people that at one time depended on the fish from the river and the millet fields stretched along the flood plains, in recent years things had changed as many of the young and resourceful men had left for Dakar, Cote DIvoire, Zaire or France.
