Some ideas on how to do what we did

Traveling to Peru with a young family is definately doable. In fact, we found the Peruvian people to be incredibly friendly, honest and genuinely excited to have a North American family travelling through their country, eating their food and trying to communicate in Spanish!

We traveled from Lima to Cusco by GROUPO TACA, an airline owned by a consortium of central american countries. It was a brand new Airbus 300, clean and on-time. I have heard horror stories about these airports, but we experienced no problems.

Where We Stayed

In Cusco, we stayed at the Orquidea Real hostel, a wonderful hotel for families. We paid $66 a night for a two bedroom suite with private bathroom, breakfast included, in a several hundred year old colonial house in the heart of the old colonial city.

The Breakfast Room, Orquidea Hotel

Here is a picture of the breakfast room. We were served a great hot breakfast, as early as 5 am if we wanted to get an early start that day

Camping on the Beach, Manu

We had a few nights camping out on sandy beaches in the Manu and Madre de Dios rivers in Amazonian Peru. This turned out to be some of the best nights of the trip! Check out the photos from THE JAGUAR DANCE on the beach one night:
